Sex allocation: At the females' whim
نویسنده
چکیده
Experimental studies of wild birds suggest that females have a previously unappreciated ability to control the sex ratio of their offspring in response to variation in sex-specific fitness benefits.

Information use in space and time: sex allocation behaviour in the parasitoid wasp Nasonia vitripennis.
Behavioural decisions require the appropriate use of relevant information about the environment. However, individuals may have imperfect information, imposing a constraint on adaptive behaviour. We explored how information use influences the sex allocation behaviour of the parasitoid wasp Nasonia vitripennis in response to local mate competition. Optimal sex ratios under local mate competition ...
متن کاملOviposition but Not Sex Allocation Is Associated with Transcriptomic Changes in Females of the Parasitoid Wasp Nasonia vitripennis
Linking the evolution of the phenotype to the underlying genotype is a key aim of evolutionary genetics and is crucial to our understanding of how natural selection shapes a trait. Here, we consider the genetic basis of sex allocation behavior in the parasitoid wasp Nasonia vitripennis using a transcriptomics approach. Females allocate offspring sex in line with the local mate competition (LMC)...
متن کاملSize-dependent sex allocation and reproductive investment in a gynodioecious shrub
In sexually dimorphic plants, resource allocation to reproduction often differs between sex morphs. In gynodioecious species, i.e. coexisting hermaphrodite and female plants within a population, females often produce more fruits than hermaphrodites. Since fruit production is costlier than flower production, hermaphrodites and females may regulate flower and fruit production differently in respo...

These mictic females produce haploid eggs meiotically that develop into either males or, if fertilized, resting eggs. Mictic females can only be fertilized within a few hours of birth3. Therefore, in Vollrath’s example a Brachionus rubens female does not fit Fisher’s theory of sex...
متن کاملSex allocation
Sex allocation is the apportioning of parental resources to male versus female offspring in a sexually reproducing species. Sex allocation theory assumes that natural selection favours parents that modify their investment into male and female offspring in such a way that it maximizes the parent’s fitness (Fisher 1930; Charnov 1982). Fisher’s equal allocation theory (1930) states that selection ...
